Learn more. In recent years, the penetration rate of lithium iron phosphate batteries in the energy storage field has surged, underscoring the pressing need to recycle retired LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries within the framework of low carbon and sustainable development.
The evolution of LFP technologies provides valuable guidelines for further improvement of LFP batteries and the rational design of next-generation batteries. As an emerging industry, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4, LFP) has been widely used in commercial electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems for the smart grid, especially in China.
Nowadays, electric vehicles mainly use the lithium iron phosphate battery and the ternary lithium battery as energy sources. Existing research and articles have given the current performance of the two batteries but have not systematically compared the two batteries with more details.
A recent report 23 from China’s National Big Data Alliance of New Energy Vehicles showed that 86% EV safety incidents reported in China from May to July 2019 were on EVs powered by ternary batteries and only 7% were on LFP batteries. Lithium iron phosphate cells have several distinctive advantages over NMC/NCA counterparts for mass-market EVs.
The electrical conductivity and the diffusion of lithium ions can be enhanced by employing novel strategies such as surface modification, particle size-reduction, and lattice substitution (doping), all of which lead to improved electrochemical performance.
